Proverbs 9Ten

Speak Life

There’s an interesting habit I’ve noticed some people have.

How many times have you said that you’re going to fail a test? Maybe you make a mistake and call yourself stupid. Sometimes, and this is the worst one, people are in a situation they don’t like, and say they want to kill themselves.

Sound like the way you speak?

This is kinda concerning. I understand that people don’t say what they mean, but what if they did?

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” Proverbs 18:21

This power means we ought to closely watch our words. Most of us love the sound of our own voice, so we’re bound to eat its fruits, whether you mean what you say or not.

“Let no corrupt talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

A cool word to remember is ‘edification’ which is to build up. When we speak, what we say should be helpful and edifying for not only ourselves but for others, and most importantly pleasing to God. We should use our words to build ourselves and others up.

Speak with the knowledge that you and your neighbour are made in God’s image. Speak the truth that God is good. Speak with the hope in the eternal life to come. There’s a time to speak about serious and negative topics, but don’t let it influence your everyday speech in a lighthearted and dismissive way.

What you say over yourself and others has an impact. So, let others hear the grace of God in your words and let them be edified through your speech.
