3 Life Lessons from Mum

Happy Mothers Day everyone! I hope you all give your mums lots of love today. And if you’re a mum, Happy Mothers Day to you 🙂

Now about my mum. She’s amazing. She is caring, kind, thoughtful, creative, makes the best food – I could go on. But everyone has those things that your mum says that stick with you, and you remember them in tricky situations. So I’m going to share some of those things my mum has said that stuck with me.

Thank God before he’s answered you

Mum once said that when you ask God for something, thank him for doing it before it’s done. This has increased my faith when I pray. And when the prayer is answered I have even more reason to be joyful!

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Philippians 4:6

Even if it’s not answered the way I’d like it to be, I’m still thankful because I know God is always doing what’s best.

What you feed grows, what you starve dies

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

This is a recent one she’s started quoting, but it’s really helpful for fighting temptation. If you resist during the moment, the temptation loses its grip on you eventually.

It’s also a tool for improvement. To get better at something, you’ve just got to feed it. Whether it’s an instrument, a sport, or a language, the more you feed it through hours of practice and activity, the more it grows. Though this idea is a law of nature, it’s good to apply it to our human lives. It helps us remember how to realistically achieve goals.

Without God, we’re stuffed!

Now, my mum wouldn’t put it in the words I have, however that’s the way she looks at problems people have. A lot of the struggles society ‘endures’ today she believes are avoidable if everyone knew God. Of course, that’s not the case. That’s why she’s so gracious and understanding of others.

Not that God will make the problem go away, but looking at a situation through his Word is the best way to go about things. This has helped me to be more aware of the challenges I face, and whether I’ve included God when figuring things out.

I hope these little lessons are encouraging to you today. I don’t know what I’d do without my mum and I’m so thankful for all the wise things she teaches me about God. So don’t ever forget those sayings from your mum – you’ll need them one day!
