You know the drill. We pray, we read the Bible and we go to church. It seems pretty simple in comparison to other religions. Sometimes it becomes too simple that we start to devote our lives elsewhere.
Is Christianity your side gig?
Maybe there’s that TV show you’ve got to watch all of the 10 seasons. Maybe your favourite band is touring and you’ve got to go see them. Maybe your healthy lifestyle is high maintenance, and you’ve got to spend lots on the gym and runners and smartwatches.
All these things are okay, but when they become an obsession, that’s when you’re in danger. When we place things above God, he becomes a side gig in your life. You can say you go to church, but it’s just part of your routine.
Be obsessed with loving God
However, being a Christian is a lifestyle. It’s a full-time commitment and requires all your devotion. We need to obsess over God first rather than worldly things. The greatest commandment is to “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” Deuteronomy 6:5
When we love God first, there’s no time to obsess and invest in other things, because we’ll be busy with the things of his kingdom. Loving God involves your whole being. He wants a relationship with us, one that will last forever.
If you take a look at the Ten Commandments, you’ll see how the first four are about loving God first:
‘“You must not have any other god but me.
“You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
“You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. ‘
To live is Christ
God should be the centre of our lives. When worldly possessions and obsessions take over, we’re not really living. We were made to live for God and the only way to do this is through Jesus Christ.
Bound in chains, Paul upheld that living is Christ and he would rather die to be with God than be caught up in the world (Phil 1:20). So consider that when you start prioritising other things instead of God.
We know how to live, and that is through Christ:
“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
